The East Coast Conference (then called the Eastern Missionary Association) was formed in 1890 when twelve churches banded together under a statement of faith adopted from the Mission Covenant (now the Evangelical Covenant Church denomination) to:

  • simplify and promote bringing the Gospel to such places as needed
  • encourage the work already begun
  • more aggressively carry on Sunday School work

From 1880 to 1915 approximately 40 congregations were formed under the EMA as God moved among immigrant people in the east coast. From 1915 to 1945, with a world caught up in two world wars and a great depression, no new churches were planted, but these churches were growing and adapting to a new culture, language and environment. Beginning again in 1945 the East Coast Conference resumed the planting of new churches, a work which continues to this day. By 2006 there were 65 congregations with over 9,000 members active in the work of Christ. The Conference includes a mission outreach to merchant sailors through the New England Seafarer's Mission (NESM) working in the ports of Boston and Providence. The Conference maintains a Conference Center, retreat and Bible Camp in West Swanzey, New Hampshire, Pilgrim Pines Conference Center. The Conference has been led by elected Superintendents who serve as Pastor and Administrator of the Conference.
